Attorney Isgett Assists Dent Middle School Students with Project

COLUMBIA, SC - February 9, 2001 - Attorney Chris Isgett spoke to the Sixth Grade TLC (The Learning Collaborative) Program at Dent Middle School in Columbia on February 9, 2001.
Mr. Isgett spoke to the students about the history and origin of the law, the Bill of Rights, and the function of courts in our society. The talk was designed to help the students prepare for an upcoming Mock Trial based on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Students will participate as judges, lawyers, witnesses, jurors, and bailiffs. Teachers Paula Gordon and Karen Shull were also present.

After speaking to the students, Isgett said, "It's gratifying to speak with young people about how special it is to be an American citizen. I wanted to convey to them that our constitutional rights, such as trial by jury, should not be taken for granted. These rights are not afforded to people in many countries around the world."

Isgett added, "The questions and comments presented by these sixth graders were mature and well reasoned, which assured me the future of our Constitution is in good hands."
